Frequently Asked Questions

Ok, I haven't actually got many questions yet since I am just launching the site. I did anticipate a number of them however and here are the answers.
Q: How do I know my personal information is protected?

A: The system is setup so that your email addresses are only ever stored in system memory until they are emailed out to you. I never save any of the addresses harvested from your account in any fashion. I know how much spam sucks, and I don't want to make it any worse. It is my promise to you that the addresses in your account are never viewed by anyone but you.

Q: What about my Gmail password?

A: The process of extracting your emails is very system resource intensive. In order for the system to support a large number of users it has to be setup in a queue based fashion, which requires temporary storage of your password. When you request to have the emails in your account harvested the system will temporarily store your password. Once the harvesting is complete, your password is permanently removed from the system.

Q: What information do you retain?

A: There are a few bits of information that I am retaining. The first and foremost is your email address. Because I don't want anyone abusing the system, I only let you submit your account once every 2 weeks. In order to keep track of this I store your email address along with the last time it was processed. In addition I also store the number of emails in your account, the number of unique email addresses identified, and the amount of time spent processing the request. These are useful statistics that will allow me to tweak the system in the future for improvements.

Q: How long will it take to get my extract?

A: This is entirely dependent on the amount of users submitting requests. Because this is handled in a first come first serve basis, there is no way to predict. The service back end is running on the Amazon EC2 service. I am scaling up the number of instances which decreases the turn around time. Because there is a cost associated with each instance, the more donations I get the more instances I can use. If you found this service at all useful, please consider donating a few dollars.
